Historic Downtown Elkin is made up of committed individuals who work together to preserve the charm and history of Elkin

Downtown Elkin, Inc. was incorporated and chartered as the Elkin Merchants Association on December 13th, 1933 under the North Carolina Merchants Association. Mr. L.G. Meed, E.E. Hayes, A.L. Griffeth, A.O. Bryan, E.S. Spainhour, J.R. Poindexter and F.M. Norman received Charter Number 121 incorporating the Elkin Merchants. One of the major benefits was to provide affordable insurance to the business owners and their employees as a collective group.  As a group they established like business hours downtown.

Embarking on the 75th Anniversary Downtown Elkin has witnessed many changes and survived fires, the 1916 and 1940’s devastating floods.  There are seven Downtown businesses that have been here at least fifty (50) years.  The Tribune began on Market Street in 1911, 96 years ago.  In 1919 Lawrence Dry Cleaners began operation in its present location, a descendent of the original owner is employed there at present.  Royall’s Soda Shoppe has been in business at it’s original location as Royall’s since 1952 (54 years) but was formerly Turner Drug Store and Elkin’s first hospital since 1923. Mr. George Royall and Dr. Turner jointly formed Turner Drug, the name was changed to Royall’s years after Dr. Turner died.  Harris Electric has remained downtown for 81 years since 1926. Home Furniture began in its present location in 1937 and has remained in business for 70 years with the founding family still owning and running the furniture store. Elk Pharmacy has been downtown for 68 years in a couple of locations downtown since 1939 with the founding family still owning and managing. Kennedy Auto began business in 1945 (62 years ago) in Downtown Elkin and relocated to larger space once.
